Leo wants peas. At every meal.
Not the fresh peas that I so lovingly cooked and pureed for him. No. He likes jarred peas. Organic, of course. But jarred. The fresh peas? *I* ate them. Leo gagged on them like they were cod liver oil.
He loves his pears, too. But he'd really prefer peas.
Today, for the umpteenth time this week, he turned up his nose at his once-beloved oatmeal and went wild, instead, for peas. Even after I sweetened it up with some banana. Thanks, mom! Pass the peas.
He used to love the delicious home-pureed sweet potatoes...so sweet and creamy. No thanks, I'll have peas. And the gardeny freshy orangy springy carrots? P. E. A. S. In a J. A. R.
What am I going to do with this pea lover? Besides the obvious (feed him peas)?

The "breastfeeding doll"
I had to rewrite this blog. I first wrote it early this morning and I was horrified by Ms. Moos' reporting and, as a proud breastfeeder, I was, frankly, offended. I'm not running out to buy Leo a breastfeeding doll, but something about this whole thing just makes my heart heavy.
I'm not sure how I feel about this.
I don't care for Jeanne Moos' attitude of disgust throughout the video; I feel it's irresponsible. I do understand that it is an opinion piece, but she doesn't really give the viewer any supporting argument for her look of repulsion. Shame on you, Jeanne Moos.
The middle-aged woman with the short hair who appears in various states of disgust throughout the video states toward the end that little girls are dealing with such conflicting feelings about their changing bodies and this might be confusing for them (or something like that). OK, interesting point, one could maybe argue that. But I believe that if we talked more openly about WHAT BREASTS ARE ACTUALLY FOR and made it more OK for women to openly breastfeed or speak about breastfeeding, it wouldn't be so instilled in little girls' minds that boobs are sexy and dirty. It wouldn't be so confusing for them.
I wonder if Jeanne Moos has children and, if so, did she breastfeed? I would be shocked. She seems to feel pretty squicky about the whole thing. I think she should do a little hard thinking about whether she really, truly examined all sides of the story with this one.

Becoming a boy
Leo skipped most of his afternoon nap - yikes! So after nursing and then feeding him some awesome peas and oatmeal around 5pm, he was edging towards grouchiness, and I was in desperate need of 5-10 minutes of kitchen cleanup time. So, lazy mother with a small apartment* that I am, I turned his highchair to face the computer screen and pulled up a Sesame Street video - Kermit singing "It's Not Easy Being Green." He stared in amazement and smiled at Kermit and, never taking his eyes off of the screen, very sloooowly raised his sippy cup** to his mouth and took a drink.
In that moment he looked so much like a little boy - and not like a baby - that my chest felt like it might burst. He is a person and he is growing every day. It is so heart-achingly wonderful and frightening and fast and delightful.
It's not easy being green:
Leo's mind: Blown.

*(the kitchen is the living room is the breakfast nook is where our computer desk sits; I sit in the computer chair while I feed Leo in his highchair because we don't have a table)
**(just water - he hardly drinks any of it at all, just a couple tiny swallows, just for fun or to teach him how to use it or whatever)

Show yourself some love
I receive some flattering spam
Subject: Hello beautiful
Hello,
You attract people by the qualities you display. You keep them by the
qualities you possess..The best thing about loving and being hurt is that
you get to know what true love really is. For as gold is tested in fire,
and so will love be perfected in pain never let you past Run over your
Life. When we Get Hurt we Need to Keep On With Life. No matter how ugly you
think you are, that special man that loves you believes you are the most
beautiful and irresistible thing on earth and nothing can ever change
that.Love is not about finding the right person, but creating a right
relationship. It's not about how much love you have in the beginning but
how much love you build till the end never give up about life and also be
positive
I am a sensitive and caring man! I am very honest person with a great
sense of humor and my interests are many and varied.I am very fit and
active.Sometimes people say I am quiet but in the right company I am
confident and relaxed.
I am looking for someone educated, intelligent, ambitious, successful and
not afraid of a challenge in a relationship. My ideal partner is very
attractive and has the maturity and self-confidence.
I'm looking for someone who considers herself extraordinary and wants the
same. Someone educated, successful and ambitious and looking for a
challenge in life

A blue stripes kind of day

Happy Wednesday! Leo and I are very excited to go visit baby Maya today - she is the daughter of one of Matt's fellow 2nd-year residents and the second baby, after Leo, born to the Harbor-UCLA EM class of 2013!
Solid food is going so-so. Leo still loooooves his oatmeal. Lukewarm on bananas and sweet potatoes. He likes the first two bites of the SP's and then he is DONE. So that's fine. Yesterday instead of mashing the bananas with a fork i just cut them into teeny cubes and put them on his tray. He seemed to really be interested in that, and although I got the same horrified banana-face when he tasted them, he kept trying them and gumming them around. Loving this fruit-and-veggie adventure. I hope to try some pureed peas soon. Or maybe he would prefer avocado?
Since last week, Matt and I have observed a very sudden emergence of personality - Leo has been protesting and demanding things. He cries when we leave the room or take a toy away before he is ready (it's actually usually the fascinating Desitin tub that we are trying to move). He is really showing his likes and dislikes and his desires. It is fascinating and wonderful albeit a bit frightening: to what extent do we need to hold firm, how much should we give in? - I mean, he's only six months old so we are not stressing out, it's more funny than anything. And exciting to see him showing us more of who he is.
He is so very sweet and cuddly and SO smiley. Several things make him absolutely CRACK UP with laughter - the squirty toys in the bath, lifting him up high above our heads, saying the word "Puppy!," saying "Choo-weeee" in a high voice like my dad does after Leo sneezes. He is incredibly goofy and I love that.
