Happy Fathers' Day to some dads.

Mama's head in the toilet = Funny.

I got sick yesterday.

Around 7:30 am I lost what was left of the previous night's fancy banquet dinner. Leo woke up a half hour later and I braced myself for what was sure to be a long and exhausting day.

The morning started out OK. I kept the sofabed in the living room folded out and Leo and I played quietly and napped on it. But eventually I had to run to the bathroom with Leo and his bouncy seat in tow. Leo laughed at me. I guess he's never seen anyone throw up before. Glad it didn't frighten him, I guess.

I started feeling worse. Matt finally got me some meds and IV fluids and came home (in the middle of his call shift) but I was so dehydrated he couldn't find a vein to stick. Plus, every time I sat up so he could try to stick me, I would nearly pass out and immediately have to lie back down. Because he couldn't find a vein, I was bleeding from being stuck. Leo started to fuss. Just as he was about to finally get the IV in I got nauseous. So the inside of my elbow was bleeding, my baby was crying, I was repeatedly almost passing out and simultaneously puking into a wastebasket while Matt was desperately trying to get the needle in so he could wash his hands and pick up a distraught Leo. Did I mention that I also had a fever and chills and it hurt to be touched? Today it's funny.

After the fluids and some anti nausea meds, Matt took Leo out for a long walk while I slept. I woke up feeling better and even ate and drank a bit. Matt had to go back to work for the night. The rest of the day was better. I was still weak but I was able to put Leo in the neglectabouncer and I even turned on Yo Gabba Gabba (judge me - do it!) and Leo was very entertained.

We both slept well last night and today I feel fantastic. That's the only upshot of a horrible sick day. The day you finally feel better, you feel so...alive.

I think it must have just been something bad I ate, because Matt and Leo are both fine, as are all the mama friends that I walked with on Friday.

Yay!

On spontaneously attending a graduation dinner in a $15 dress

At about 6pm tonight, Matt called me - he was done with work for the day, would I like to order a pizza for dinner? Um, duh! Moments later he called back - he had forgotten that graduation was tonight - the 3rd-year residents would receive their diplomas and essentially become full-fledged EM physicians. We had expensive tickets to the banquet dinner.

I did the fastest cleanup a young mom could muster. I quickly showered while a thoroughly confused Leo watched me from his bouncy seat on the bathroom floor, rolled my hair, slathered on some makeup and threw on a $15 red dress from Forever 21 that I picked up on a whim last week. [I completely rampaged my closet to try to find a dress that fit me from my pre-baby-boobs life...negative.] I looked pretty damn good for last-minute...but you can fool anyone with an impressive shoes-dress-lipstick combo.

I didn't know what a residency graduation would involve...and even though we had to cut out early (Matt's on 30-hour call tomorrow - his last of intern year!), I was so moved by the evening. I'm corny in that way.

The program directors announced each graduate and talked about them a little bit - their pre-residency achievements, their personal lives, etc., before calling them up to receive their diplomas (to great applause, of which post-bedtime Leo was NOT a fan). I was floored by these people. Harvard med school grad, 4.0 gpa in undergrad at UCLA. More than one resident described in several letters of recommendation as "the single best medical student I have ever encountered." A father of three who balanced residency with family life. A resident whose board score was among the top 5 in the country.

It really hit me how very incredibly hard my husband has worked to earn his place at this program. I was so proud to be there with him.

And so happy to be drinking a glass of wine while he fed the baby.

Congratulations to the class of 2011, who are surely out celebrating as I type (and should be sleeping). Only two more years...we can do it.

It's me, Leo, again...

Just kidding. I don't sleep through the night (consistently). I did once, though. My mom blogged about it. I guess she thought it was pretty awesome.

A quiet Saturday morning

Matt is at work, Leo is still asleep and I am enjoying a quiet cup of coffee before he gets up. It's a typical June-gloom-y morning in the South Bay but there is something comforting about a grey Saturday morning...maybe it's the Minnesotan in me that likes the cozy sweater and hot coffee combo. Happy Saturday, everyone.

Thanks be to God

and by "God," I mean my uncle Matt, who we call "Uncle God" because when I was a little girl and I tried to picture God in heaven, I would picture my uncle Matt barefoot in a suit sitting in a circle with a bunch of people in the sky. Anyway, he sent me this rad picture.

which he thought looked an awful lot like this picture

(but something about it also reminds me of this picture)

Uncle God bless us. Everyone.

Gonna be a late one

Shoooot, everyone in my house fell asleep at 630pm tonight. This does not bode well for ANYONE's bedtime!

A woman viciously attacks her child

I tried to put Leo in his swing for a catnap this evening but he just sat there giggling and blowing raspberries. So we did this for a few minutes:

...and now he is out cold.

Personality

I'm really, really enjoying getting to know this little person.

I'm trying to figure out how social he is or isn't, and how to time our outings for maximum baby enjoyment. We went to library storytime last week and he LOVED it. He was smiling and laughing and standing the whole time - so animated and excited by the singing and clapping.

Yesterday, Leo and I went to a music and sign class with our friend Jackie and her son, who is two weeks younger than Leo. He was really into it at first, but I sort of timed it poorly - should have fed him before the class, but he wasn't hungry yet - so he got hungry during the class, and because it was too exciting/stimulating he would fuss for the boob and then pull off after about two minutes to pay attention to what was going on around him. As with all ill-timed cycles of hunger and sleep this all gradually spiraled into exhaustion and a nap in my arms for the remainder of the class. We're going to go back to the class this week, so we'll probably just wake up a little early on Thursday so that he's fed and napped and can really enjoy it.

He seems to be easily overwhelmed by meeting lots of new people. When we were in Minnesota visiting my family, we had two or more groups of visitors each day and it took him a while to warm up to everyone, and it made for a little bit of crankiness. I started to limit it so he wouldn't be so overstimulated but I do still believe it's important for him to get used to meeting new people.

After yesterday's class, we got home and nursed and had some quiet time then went out to walk with our mama and baby friends. He fussed in his stroller, so I put him in a baby carrier and just carried him for the whole two-hour walk. I like to go and do and be out with people, and I believe that babies will to some extent acclimate to the family's lifestyle, but sometimes you just need to hold on to your Mom. I don't mind it one bit.

He is sleeping great. He goes to bed between 830-9 (I try to always put him down awake, and he usually falls asleep on his own these days) and wakes once, around two, to eat. I feel that I could faze this feeding out but I'm not really in a hurry. He usually wakes again around 5 and fusses for a hot minute, then puts himself back to sleep until morning. The past two nights, though, he has been rolling onto his tummy and then crying - I guess he can't get back over to his back. This terrifies me, of course, but they say that once they are strong enough to roll it really isn't dangerous for them to roll onto their bellies. Still, I camped out in his room for a while last night and woke every 20 minutes or so to check on him...

Mornings are my favorite time of day. He eats between 8-830 so he wakes and coos quietly in his crib sometime between 7-8. When I hear him wake up I get up, make my (small bit of) coffee, wash my face, etc. Then I go into his room, turn up the lights, and lean over the side of the crib and am always rewarded with a gigantic grin. This is one happy, happy baby.
