That moment when you realize that some of your parenting is actually sinking in

I just want to remember this. So much so that I actually am blogging it.

Last summer, Matt bought Leo a little Batman key at Home Depot while they were running errands (one of those decorated, uncut keys). He loved it and, despite our warnings, brought it to school, and immediately lost it outside somewhere in the yard. Over and done, we thought, a lesson learned.

Two weeks ago, Leo found and brought home a small, polished rock that he found at school. It was the kind of thing that a child would find and treasure. I suggested that he bring it to his teacher and see if they could find the rightful owner, but he loved it so much and said he didn't want to return it. I was distracted at the moment and filed the whole thing away to deal with later, then forgot, of course.

Then! The other day, a little girl at school found his Batman key and returned it to him! Oh my goodness, the joy!

And now, this morning, right before school, Leo told me, "Mom, I think I want to find the person who this rock belongs to." So he brought it to school and asked around. One little girl identified the rock as "Susie's special crystal, which she has been looking for." I leaned in to listen - Susie goes to school on opposite days. Leo said, "okay, who goes to school on Monday?" A little girl raised her hand and he said, "Cathy, will you bring this crystal to Susie on Monday?"

Leo's teacher and I made eye contact and she said, "Leo, you solved that problem, Susie will be so happy." And my little boy beamed and went on playing with his friends.

Just a great moment, knowing that I didn't have to harp on him, just by experiencing the losing and finding of his own toy, he was able to understand that someone else might want their special rock back. I was so proud, and so happy!

A tiny little success that I don't want to forget :)
